Well, true to form, I’ve just had another ‘incident’ that happened after my wife had left and I was the only one home.
About 10 minutes ago, my wife left to visit some of her family. I am alone here, except for the cat.
Our toaster is old…very old. We bought it at a second hand store, just because we liked it. It’s a chrome, 2 slice toaster that looks like it maybe came from the 50’s or 60’s. I had to replace the electrical cord because it was fraying in some spots, would get quite warm when we used the toaster and just generally didn’t look safe. I replaced it with a heavy duty appliance cord, and that new cord is relatively short. Bear with me, this info will come into play later.
I had just made some toast to have with my coffee and took the toast and coffee to my office where I was reading. Suddenly I heard a loud ‘crash’ coming from the kitchen. My first thought was that the cat had jumped up on the counter and knocked something off. But without even getting up from my chair I could see the cat on the back of the sofa, where he likes to sit and look out the window.
I got up to investigate and found my old toaster on the floor in the kitchen. Now, I had just made toast and the toaster was still a bit warm. I have toast with my coffee often in the morning and there is a routine to making it. I put a plate in front of the toaster when I make toast so I know I didn’t have the toaster close to the front edge of the countertop.
Also, the toaster was unplugged, of course, as I found it on the floor. I picked the toaster up, set it back on the counter and plugged it back in. I then pulled the toaster to the front of the countertop as far as it would go, but the cord is so short it wouldn’t even make it to the front of the countertop. This toaster had to be unplugged first, if it were to accidently fall off the counter.
I know I left the toaster back toward the back of the counter, still plugged in, after I made my toast. Something had to have pushed with pretty good force to unplug that toaster and then knock it off the counter.
I LOVE that old toaster and don’t want it broken, so my ‘houseguests’ got a pretty good scolding this morning!
So far, the toaster still works.
